understanding arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions and one of the most common causes of disability. In common terms, it means painful joints. Although it can lead to multiple other symptoms such as limitation of movement, swollen, painful and deformed joints resulting in difficulty in day to day activities.

It has been divided into many other subtypes. Of all the subtypes, the two most important are Inflammatory arthritis and Degenerative arthritis.

Inflammatory arthritis such as, Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition in which the body’s own immune system is reacting towards its own cell. Hence, early diagnosis and early management become crucial steps in halting the progression.

On the other hand, Degenerative arthritis or popularly known as Osteoarthritis is wear of the joint. It is primarily age-related degeneration of the protective cartilage of joints. Hence, preventive measures such as physiotherapy, weight reduction and other such measures become crucial. Once osteoarthritis sets in, it progresses in 4 different stages and the treatment depends upon the stage that it is in, as evident by X-ray and the clinical symptoms that the patient has.

Arthritis treatment in India has improved up to a large extent with newer drugs being added to the treatment protocol.
