Vertebral compression fracture or VCF is caused due to loss of bone mass mostly due to ageing.

This loss of bone mass is called Osteoporosis.

Symptoms include pain in the back, pain increases on standing, decreased spinal mobility, height loss, hunched back posture or kyphosis.

In a patient with severe weak bone or severe osteoporotic bone, even coughing, sneezing forcefully or lifting a lightweight can cause VCFs.

VCF are more common in postmenopausal women and elderly males.

It can also happen in young people, but in young people, it is due to high-intensity trauma such as car accident or fall from height.

VCF can be prevented by taking calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Apart from that, there are various medicine that helps increase calcium and vitamin D density in bone such as bisphosphonate, teriparatide, newer drugs such as Denosumab.

DEXA scan or bone mineral density test helps in identifying patient who has a higher risk of VCF. When u get a DEXA scan or a BMD (bone mineral density test ), A T -Score is given. A T-score of value more than -1 is normal. If its value lies between -1 to -2.5, it is known as osteopenia whereas the value of -2.5 or below is referred to as Osteoporosis.

Treatment: can be Non-surgical as well as Surgical. Non-surgical treatment includes appropriate back bracing, rest and medication, whereas surgical treatment includes Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty.

As such there are no vertebral compression fracture specialists in India, VCF is treated by an Orthopaedic surgeon or a  Spine surgeon.
